The Donna Louise Hospice for Children & Young People is calling on local people to take on a one million step challenge in support of local families as it launches its popular springtime campaign, Step Up.

From 1st April (or any other date you choose), participants will walk, run, dance or skip their way to one million steps. They’ll walk an average of 10,000 steps a day (the recommended daily amount to maintain good health) for one hundred days, getting sponsored for every stride.

The face of Step Up is 10 year-old Anna who has Juvenile Nephritis, a condition which causes kidney inflammation, hyper-mobility and Scoliosis and has had a kidney transplant. Despite all of her challenges, she is a happy, fun-loving little girl who takes everything in her stride.

Coming to The Donna Louise is a chance for Anna to have fun, just as every child should. Anna’s mum, Lisa, explains: “The Donna Louise gives Anna the chance to feel like any other child, and I know they’ll take the best care of her. She never enjoys herself more than when we’re at the hospice. Life can be chaotic when you have a child with a complex condition; for me, it’s a chance to take a break from the stress and worry of our whirlwind life.”

However you choose to Step Up, with the well-documented health benefits of moving more, you’ll not only be stepping up for children like Anna, you’ll be stepping up for you.

Whether it’s one person who wants to make a difference, or a business looking to get their whole workforce involved, by taking part in The Donna Louise’s one million step challenge, supporters will be making sure that The Donna Louise can be there for families like Anna’s every step of the way.

Nathan Walton, Director of Income Generation at The Donna Louise commented: “With less than 10% of the hospice’s income coming from government sources, we are hugely reliant on fundraising and charitable donations from the local community to continue our vital support for families such as Anna’s. Taking part in Step Up and getting sponsored for every stride is a great way to get involved and support the only children’s hospice in our area.”

It’s just £10 to sign up and everyone who takes part will receive a t-shirt and welcome pack with loads of ideas and inspiration to keep them going. Registration for “Step Up” is open now at
