Caring for a child or young adult with complex needs can put a huge strain on the whole family. Our respite breaks provide a fantastic way for families to recharge their batteries safe in the knowledge that their loved one is happy and safe at The Donna Louise.
Whether staying with us for a few hours, a day, or longer, our respite stays are often a lifeline for parents and carers.
For the children, teenagers or young adults staying with us, it can be like a mini-holiday - the chance to meet up with friends and have lots of fun. To someone used to being a carer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year, it’s chance to do things other people take for granted - sit on the sofa and watch a movie, spend time with their other children, and even enjoy an uninterrupted night’s sleep.Although the opportunity to have a night off is a rare one, families often choose to come and stay at The Donna Louise, too. Our care team makes sure that every need of the child, teenager or young adult is met so that the family can forget about being carers and just enjoy being a family.
We can also care for the child or young adult in the comfort of their own home, meaning that they’re in an environment they know, while their parents or carers make the most of a few hours off.
Amanda, James' mum
“We’ve dug to depths we didn’t know we had and then gone further. This is when we ring The Donna Louise and they scoop us up and put us back together. The staff are amazing. The care they give James is second to none. It’s a place I can go for a complete rest. We go to stay as a family and I get to be a mum rather than a nurse.”
